What is Second Step? The Second Step program is universal, classroom-based and designed to: increase students' school success, decrease problem behaviors, and promote social-emotional competence and self-regulation. How will you use Second Step? Second Step provides instruction in social and emotional learning with units on skills for learning, empathy, emotion management, friendship skills, and problem solving. The program contains separate sets of lessons for use in prekindergarten through eighth grade implemented in 22 to 28 weeks each year. How will Second Step benefit my student? The main skills taught in the Second Step program are social-emotional and self-regulation. Students with good social-emotional skills are better at understanding and communicating their feelings, managing their emotions, solving interpersonal problems, making friends, and getting along with others. Students with good self-regulation skills have the ability to monitor and manage their feelings, thoughts and behaviors. |
